Oak Knob Farm

Приєднався 9 чер 2017
Oak Knob Farm is our small and slowly expanding farm on 5 acres in Deerfield, New Hampshire. Our farm was named in honor of my great-great-grandparent's homestead established in the mid-1800's in Henry County, Illinois.
We currently have a 1000 sq ft vegetable garden, as well as an ever growing variety of berries including blueberries, raspberries, goji berries, cranberries, haaskap (honeyberry) and strawberry.
We raise a small flock of egg-layers, and have a small sawmill to process timber from our property. We'd love for you to join us!

Nitrogen Fixers in a New Food Forest. Building the Understory
I'm starting to transform a rocky forest knoll (an oak knob?) into a food forest.
Adding plants that serve many purposes: adding nitrogen fixers and pollinators and a living mulch, and in permaculture terms also adding to the root layer and herbaceous layer.

DR Chipper/shredder - FIXING A DUD

My DR chipper/shredder has been disappointing since day 1. Often broken, underpowered, poorly assembled, hard starting, bad customer service. Needless to say I am underwhelmed. After a few years of use, I've decided to upgrade the machine with a larger motor, better bearings, electric start and more Affiliate links to the parts used: Clutch: www.amazon.com/dp/B00372RU56/?coliid=IQ3SFYEYMT2ZW&co...

Clever ideas, Dave!
Thanks Cathy!
Well done oak .
Thanks Howie! Lots more fun stuff to add this summer, too
I was thinking of getting one your thoughts
If it's used and cheap? Maybe! I've added a clutch to mine (amongst other upgrades) and it makes all the difference.
❤
wow! Thank you for sharing~
Not a bad little unit for messing around and grabbing a little video for UA-cam. I wish my Mavic Mini had follow me and some obstacle avoidance sensors. Take care my friend.
Cool!
you shared unusual !I'll be back-
You have a gorgeous piece of property. I enjoyed seeing all the wonderful food you are growing.
Hello host.A new friend
420cc = 28Horsepower. Nice! 😃 Buy a used chipper, then install these mods, and end up with a much better chipper at the price of a new weaker one.
Can you help tell me what kind of stone i have? Its hard to explain but it has around 10 rectangle see through green stones and what looks to be gold to me but who knows and clear crystals as well like some kind of quartz and some dark orange and in 2 spots its magnetic. Ive taken pictures and tried searching on google but many different options pop up that dont look like it. Its also not fully cleaned because i dont know how lol
🐾🏞️👉🧖🏡
How did you get that out!!!
👍💎👍👍 very beautiful diamond 👍👍👍❤👍👍
You always have your garden so well thought out. Looks great!
Wow, I wonder how your compost is made?
It's a mix of my leftover veg scraps, grass clippings, leaves, and bedding / manure from the chicken coop. I'll try to make a video about it this summer as my scrap piles grow
@@OakKnobFarm Awesome! Look forward to it!
so much garlic coming!
Make sure to comment below if you'd like me to make a video focusing on anything I showed. Thanks for watching!
I enjoyed that! I like the way you are building soil with the materials that you have in natural abundance! I can see you have to protect against deer!
Thanks! I've been happy with my soil building experiments so far. I should dig a few test pits and see what's going on deeper down in the hugelkultur piles. And deer are certainly a bit of a pain!
Looking good!
🤣🤣They don't want to go out.
They are such little shits, lol
Nice work Oak . You are smarter than a chicken
😂 hahaha
Sorry ... don't mean to bug you, but I am intrigued with your upgrade. I have the Pro375 11.5 - I think I have a clutch. The pull cord when starting is a hazard as it gets violently pulled from my hand and one time cracking the plastic engine cover. Been 3-4 years since I started it but I hate it. What I wanted to ask is what Briggs electric start motor model did you get? i think I currently have 7 hp - newer models are 9 hp after 2022 I read. Thanks again
Mine is a bit older than yours, I think (the previous model). You can tell if it has a clutch: the chipper assembly should be able to spin freely with the engine off if you have one. The original pull start engine was a 250cc +/- "Briggs 1150", which I understand to be abut 9 HP and 11.5 ft-lbs of torque. It also did the same thing as yours yanking the pull cord out of your hand. The new electric start engine is a 420cc "Predator" I got from Harbor Freight
I've watched all your videos today - thanks again for showing your creativity and knowledge. I would love to do the improvements you did one day - can I ask what kind of welder you used? Can it be done with a Harbor Freight one? Was it stick welding? I have a similar machine - used one season and sitting for 3 years. Been thinking of taking a stab at it.
I have a relatively cheap Lincoln 120V wire feed welder that I bought at Lowes. It's nothing super fancy, so I imagine something from HF would work fine
Thank you for posting your helpful videos
Hi, it's 2024 now, and I'm wondering if you are harvesting this year from the asparagus crowns you moved two years ago? Thanks!
They haven't quite popped up yet for the year, but I should be able to harvest some this spring, I think
@@OakKnobFarm They will be worth the wait, enjoy! Trying to figure out how long to wait to harvest my 'Millennial Asparagus', they were already 2-3 years old and quite large when I planted my purchased crowns. I also grew 'Martha Washington Asparagus' from seed last year but have a while to wait for those.
Wish you lived next to me. I have the same chipper. Nothing but problems in the 1st year and has been sitting outside the last 4 years looking like an orange sculpture. Same experience of no support or local place to service. Wheel bearing went ... got replacement wheel bearings from Dr. Power but could not get it to balance right. I forgot how many washers when on each side of the whee - Starts ok from my repairs but the flywheel starts hitting against something after a while ... got fed up and it sat. Been thinking of trying again and saw your video. Hopefully it will help me more than Dr. Power
how heavy of a sledge do you use?
It's fairly light. I think it's an 8 lb head
I think it is a nice upgrade!!
Can you move your asparagus in spring? My bed is so full of weeds. I just wanna move everything to a new place.
Thank you …
Did you pick asparagus from it the next Spring, or did you avoid picking asparagus from the moved patch that year?
I didn't harvest spears from the roots I moved the next spring to allow the roots to get better developed
Female plants produce seeds. Male roots produce more fruit.
great video mate.
Thank you I will try now
This is gonna help out to the max.
i like the clutch idea
I very much enjoyed this video. Didn't DR initially ship this chipper with a clutch? I forgot where I read it now, but those clutches DR used kept failing, and DR sent out repair kits that did away with the clutch. Doing away with the clutch is what's causing the hard starting. There's a lot of vibration on the bearing visible at 10:51. I wonder about the longevity of this bearing.
I believe you are correct that these used to have clutches, but that was before I bought mine (I've had this one a little over 5 years). I have heard about the clutch failures, but am unsure what they used for an OEM unit back in the day. We'll see! I looked at the point in the video you referenced, and it certainly looks like the bearing is moving. While looking at it in person it does not appear to vibrate at all. I'll have to put a run-out gauge on it to see what's going on for sure next time I run it
I just had a look at that bearing. One of the set screws loosened up and fell out. Thanks for your keen eye!!! Time for a little lock-tite!
Nice upgrade Dave. Looks like it does decent size chips (not too small). I really want to get a chipper so I don't have to drive to town to get them. They're free when they have them but we have branches everywhere up here that I could be running. Take care.
I do like the chip size from this machine. a bit smaller pieces than a big professional chipper, but much lager than sawdust, etc.
This is an OUTSTANDING Upgrade that you have done My Friend 👍👍😇😇👌👌Cheers 🍻🍻
Thanks! I hope you're staying warm this winter!
I was thinking it would be one of those Chevy LS engine swaps. I guess you can work your way up though...lol.
Haha! It was just a bit too heavy with the V8, so I downsized
Wow awesome video! My son found some tourmaline embedded in a big quartz rock. Would this method help us extract the tourmaline or do you suggest a better way?
Unfortunately I don't think it would work. The Herkimer diamonds are water clear quartz, and it won't dissolve with the muriatic acid
This is the worst crystal cleaning video, I've ever seen!! Quit making horrible videos you idiot!!! Just quit you suck!!!
a real piece of crap.....eh???
more or less
Also.... I just got done hot rodding the chipper. First test this weekend, and video coming soon
On my truck, i have the left rod but the right got disconnected. The left wont release no matter what i do. Any advice on getting it open at the point?
Hi, unfortunately I've never had that happen. I wish you luck on your repair, and wish I could help
What does the whey do?
you use it to jump start the fermentation process. Live culture yogurt is made with the same bacteria as lacto-fermented foods.
It seemed to have lost its aggressive self-feeding zip in the chipper. It looked like the blade was dull in this video. How well do the blades last for you? How many hours of chipping do you typically get out of each expensive blade?
I probably sharpen the blade every 4-5 uses (assuming maybe a few hours of chipping each time I use it). You can sharpen them on a bench grinder (or worst case with a hand file) a few times before you buy a new one. Just make sure you don't get the blade too hot, or you're ruin the temper
Awesome thanks!!!! I’ll try it.
